Lenormand Cards

February 26, 2021 Thelemic Showcase

A member walked the group through a divination using the Lenormand Cards.  Although not Crowley’s Thoth Deck, it utilized a form of divination which a member of our local group enjoys.

The Lenormand technique can be read with a regular playing card deck, or, with the Lenormand cards themselves.  There are several spreads, including one called ‘The Grand Tableau’.  If you are interested in doing this spread, it is recommended that the size of the Lenormand deck which you purchase be relatively small so as to fit on a regular size table.  If you get a large deck, then doing the Grand Tableau would require either a larger table, or floor space.

It is alleged that Madame Lenormand read to nobility, perhaps even Napoleon – which gives this particular divination technique a rich history.

Each card is given a precise meaning, similar to the pip cards of the Tarot.  Since the Lenormand cards are not Tarot, they are referred to as Fortune Telling Cards.  The same Jungian techniques for using Tarot can be applied to the Lenormand cards, since archetype knows no bounds and is a personal symbol system of the individual.  However, it is unknown to me if the astrological and Qabalistic correspondences of the Tarot can be applied to the Lenormand – whose symbol set might have to be used independently of the Tarot otherwise.

The Lenormand deck which a member of our group purchased, was the Pixie deck.  The Pixie deck comes in its own tin, which is less likely to fall apart as do some deck boxes (leaving card owners to resort to alternate methods of storages such as wooden boxes, or scarves and fabric bags).
